Q & A

Tree Pruning Is there a "preferred" time of the year for pruning?

In general, pruning can be done during any season. However, depending upon the amount to cut and the breed of tree some trees react differently. For example, a deciduous or fruiting tree does much better during the spring months beginning the end of May. Deciduous trees that flower after May should be pruned between Jan & Mar. Prune flowering cherries in late summer, flowering evergreens in May, and conifers in autumn. Cut out dead, damaged, or diseased wood as it is discovered.

What should I do if I think my tree has insect and/or disease problems?

As soon as you notice any abnormality in your tree’s appearance, you should begin a careful examination of the problem. Insects and diseases can threaten a tree’s health. By identifying the specific symptoms of damage and understanding the causes, you may be able to diagnose the problem and take appropriate actions for treatment. You should contact a tree care professional for assistance immediately.

Covering /Mulching/Planting over Tree Roots?

Mulching or planting within the drip line of any shallow rooted tree should be done with care, focusing on the needs of the TREE. Suffocation can result if roots are unnaturally "buried." Mulching should be done lightly and kept from contact with the bark. Any ground covers planted in the root zone should be drought tolerant. Keep in mind that any trees growing in lawn will be forced to shallow rooting because of the way they are watered.

Tree Pruning Should I have my tree topped?

No, when you top a tree, you sever the places energy routed. The trees will form improper growth on decayed joints, thus creating a problem on the next monsoon or windy day. Topping will virtually stunt the trees growth & the tree will never be structurally sound again. Let A West Tree Service take a look at your tree/trees and recommend the proper trimming needed.

Should we prune back branches when transplanting?

It is not recommended to prune back tree branches directly after transplanting. Plants store their food reserves (carbohydrates) in their woody tissue and this food is important for root growth. Any pruning at planting will greatly slow new root development, which is desperately needed in a newly transplanted tree.

What is deadwooding?

Deadwooding is an obvious term, which involves the full removal of dead, dying, or diseased branches from the tree. Sometimes you'll want to prune a tree to control its size or shape — for instance, if its too close to a building or utility lines. Also, pruning dead branches that cross and rub against others in the wind or broken branches caused by a storm. Let the experts at A West Tree Service examine your trees and estimate the appropriate pruning of any deadwood. We treat your trees with respect when pruning them and they'll be healthier and more beautiful for years to come.

When is Tree Removal Appropriate?

Tree Removal may be required when:
- The Tree is dead
- The Tree has severe decay, sometimes indicated by fruiting bodies.
- The Tree has critical structural defects such as cracks.
- The Tree is in decline, with more than 50% dead or dying branches.
